Suggestions for Wedding Themes: Not Necessarily Corny

May 30, 2009

Some people love the ideas of wedding themes. Others, however, cringe at the thought. They think that a theme will take a way from the ceremony, making it something laughable. They feel a theme will make their nuptials cliche, or even corny.

However, there are simple and classic ways to project a wedding theme, without risking being over the top.

If you and your fiance were engaged under the moonlight, perhaps a celestial wedding theme would be in order. Exchange vows after sundown, and decorate your reception hall with dark hues of blue and silver. Wedding themes that project the two of you and how you met will always remain classy and beautiful.

Wedding favors may also be modeled around the activities you both share. If the two of you share the outdoors, and are always on a new adventure, plan an outdoor wedding.  You will also need to choose specific music for each part of your wedding, like the wedding ceremony songs and father daughter songs.

Ask the attendees to dress casually, and have the ceremony in a field surrounded by beautiful wildflowers. Keep this themed wedding simple, from the bride’s dress to the cuisine, to keep the outdoor theme alive.

When choosing a wedding theme, it is important to remain within your comfort zone, and with the theme that represents both you and your fiance.. If you and your fiance have never been to the sea, and don’t enjoy swimming, then choosing an aquatic theme may not be best suited for you.

Similarly, keep in mind that it is your wedding, and you needn’t project ideas and themes of loved ones. Helpful advice is appreciated, and more than helpful, but do not let family members push you into a wedding theme you may not be comfortable with. Remember, choosing a wedding theme should include a scene that depicts both you and your fiance, and the love you share.

To avoid a wedding theme that is “over the top” remember that everything in your wedding does not have to reflect the theme. If you choose a moonlight theme, your cake and desserts should not be shaped as moons and stars. Fitting every facet of your wedding into the theme runs the risk of being corny.

The most important thing to remember is to keep it simple, as a few pieces of decoration will suffice to present your theme adequately; your reception hall need not be dripping in decorations.

If you are unsure about choosing a wedding theme, or whether or not your decorations and location present your wedding theme, consult your local wedding planner. Wedding planners hold a wealth of knowledge pertaining to appropriate wedding themes, and often have years of experience matching the bride and groom with a wedding theme that suits them.
